37-year-old Sean Fraser is a former lawyer from Nova Scotia who was announced by Justin Trudeau as the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and replaces Marco Mendicino.

In short term, IRCC will continue to reach its main goals. It plans to achieve the 401,000 new permanent residents target for 2021, to continue family reunification, and to resettle refugees from Afghanistan.

Immigration through Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and Quebec’s programs will also continue.

The Liberals made promised many immigration changes during the 2021 election such as removing the citizenship fees, reducing processing times and introducing more pathways for temporary workers and international students to become permanent residents.
